About Money Lessons

Money Lessons publishes short, clear lessons on the money tasks most people meet sooner or later: using bank accounts, reading a paycheck, understanding how taxes are figured, and paying for big purchases such as a car or a home. Each lesson explains the mechanics with a worked example, so the next form, statement or offer makes more sense.

Lesson topics

  • Banking Basics – checking and savings accounts, overdrafts, certificates of deposit, reading a statement and joint accounts.
  • Taxes & Paychecks – pay stubs, gross versus net pay, marginal and effective rates, deductions, credits and withholding.
  • Big Purchases – car loans, leasing versus buying, how a mortgage payment is split, closing costs and buy now, pay later plans.

How lessons are written

Each lesson focuses on one question and explains the mechanics behind it. Numbers in examples are round illustrations calculated in the article, not quotes of current market rates. We do not recommend specific banks, cards, funds or other products, and we do not accept payment for coverage.
